ABUJA — October 1, 2026: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has told Nigerians that the country has moved beyond what he described as the most difficult phase of his economic reforms and is entering a period focused on prosperity.
In his Independence Day address marking Nigeria's 66th anniversary, Tinubu presented the government's reforms as necessary steps towards economic recovery and urged Nigerians to remain patient and committed to the country's future.
The speech comes at a time when Nigerians continue to contend with the effects of higher living costs, fuel prices and pressure on household incomes.
The Nigeria Labour Congress, meanwhile, used the anniversary to call for stronger action on workers' welfare, including lower petrol prices and improved wages.
Why Nigerians should care
Independence anniversaries are about more than ceremonial celebrations. They provide an opportunity to examine where the country stands economically, politically and socially—and what citizens expect from the next phase.
Nigeria's 66th year begins with a mixture of optimism from government, economic pressure among households and continuing debate about the country's direction.
