Nigeria's Independence Day is being marked through a new festival concept bringing together culture, tourism, sport, entertainment and hospitality.
The One Nation Festival, taking place at Nautica Beach in Lagos today, October 1, features a celebrity football tournament, cultural performances, a heritage village, food and hospitality experiences, entertainment and an evening production.
The celebrity football component features Nigerian football legends including Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Joseph Yobo and Victor Ikpeba as captains and ambassadors.
More than entertainment
The festival's organisers describe the event as an attempt to connect national celebration with tourism and creative enterprise.
Its programme brings together:
- Football
- Music
- Dance
- Comedy
- Fashion
- Food
- Heritage
- Family activities
- Tourism
- Business networking
Why this model is important
Nigeria's creative economy increasingly overlaps with tourism.
A major cultural event can create opportunities for musicians, designers, hospitality businesses, food entrepreneurs, athletes and tourism operators simultaneously.
Festivals Desk: The future of Nigerian festivals may be less about one entertainment genre and more about creating complete cultural experiences.
