London is hosting a new festival designed to place African cultural memory, creativity and heritage at the centre of a month-long programme.
The African Heritage Festival London 2026 runs from October 1 to 31, with its main festival programme taking place at Mountview and CLF Art Lounge in Peckham.
The festival brings together literature, cinema, music, visual art, performance, history and living cultural traditions.
Its organisers describe the project as more than a showcase.
The intention is to create a meeting point between Africa and its global diaspora, established cultural figures and younger generations, indigenous languages and international audiences.
The inaugural edition places particular emphasis on the literary legacy of D. O. Fágúnwà , while also incorporating music, fashion, food, storytelling and performance.
A special cultural gala is also built around an interpretation of a Yoruba traditional wedding, bringing costume, music, ritual and celebration into a contemporary London setting.
For Britain's African diaspora, events such as this provide an opportunity to celebrate identity without separating heritage from contemporary creativity.
Culture Desk: African heritage is not frozen in the past. It continues to evolve through the people who carry it forward.
