Researchers say they may have solved a long-running mystery surrounding the calendar used by the community associated with the Dead Sea Scrolls.
New research suggests the group may indeed have followed a distinctive 364-day calendar, creating a highly structured system of 52 weeks.
Why the calendar matters
Calendars are more than systems for counting days.
They determine when communities celebrate festivals, conduct religious practices and organise communal life.
A window into ancient society
The Dead Sea Scrolls provide historians with valuable information about religious and intellectual life in the ancient world.
