Uganda is mourning the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Tooro.
He became monarch at just three years old in 1995 and was recognised internationally at the time as the world's youngest reigning king. He died at the age of 34.
His story was unusual because his reign began during childhood but developed into a modern African monarchy that combined traditional authority with contemporary public engagement.
The return of his body to Uganda for burial has therefore become both a national moment and a major event for the Tooro Kingdom.
The bigger story
African traditional institutions continue to evolve.
Kings and chiefs today often operate at the intersection of heritage, community development, diplomacy, tourism and modern public life.
King Oyo's life represented that changing relationship between traditional leadership and the modern African state.
